Name: Teresa L. Shelton
Partner’s name: Emily
Students’ names: Isabella, Abbi, and Val
Activities Used: student’s journals, Take Me Out Of the Bathtub and other silly dilly songs by Alan Katz, Month-By-Month Phonics For Upper Grades a Second Chance for Struggling Readers and Students Learning English by Patricia M. Cunningham and Dorothy P. Hall, making word lessons, large white board for vocabulary from reading Geronimo Stilton: Lost Treasure of the Emerald Eye by Elisabetta Dami, and vocabulary categorizing for 470 activity.
Reasons for Activity: Activities were changed or modified because I added Val who was brand new to the tutoring session. We had two new students this past week. One was Val who is in the fifth grade and came in with my fifth grader and the other was a little boy who came in with another boy. Ms. Gray wasn’t sure what to do and asked me to do something until Dr. Edwards came in. I told Val to sit at my table and let the little boy go with his friend who was with Abbi and Rachel. Dr. Edwards came in about half way through and was unaware we were going to have new students. Due to this fact we just kept the new students in our groups I had them in. Val was brand new to tutoring so I had her write in her journal about herself. I asked her if she liked reading and writing. She told me she liked reading a lot but not writing. Abbi, my regular student loves to write. So, I had Abbi write me about Halloween because it was the biggest event for the past week. I had Val write five facts about herself that she would be willing to share with me and I would share five facts about myself. I was trying to get her to write and get to know her better. She was pretty quiet at first. It turns out she is new to the Joplin school district and wasn’t close friends with Abbi. They are just both in fifth grade so they know each other. Abbi wrote me a complete story about her Halloween costume and it took longer than Val. Val wrote me a bullet style list of facts. After we talked and shared about ourselves. I started her with the poem book Take me out of the Bathtub and other silly dilly songs. Abbi had told her that we read it and it was so good she checked it out of the school library to read at home. We picked one out and she read it silently. I than asked her if she liked singing or cheering and she said singing. She didn’t want to read it by herself so we read it together as a song. She seemed to like that but did stumble on some words. Next, did the 470 categorizing activities with both of them pieces of construction paper with six categories. They then had to fill in the categories with items they believed belong in each category. They did really well with all the noun words but the word pretty was a little harder for them. We then worked on taking a November word that was jumbled up and figuring it out. The girls worked together and did quite well. They both love the Geronimo Stilton book series so I had used the world Stilton. After they figured the word out they used an index card to make up words from the letters available. Next, we went to a corner on the floor to start reading the book Geronimo Stilton: Lost Treasure of the Emerald Eye. Abbi started by reading the title and then a couple of paragraphs, then I read, and Val read last. She did well. She seems a little unsure of herself but she was reading this series also so she knew the material well. We then took the whiteboard and created a grid. The girls each had two squares. In one square they wrote a word they didn’t know the meaning of and in the other square a word that was hard to pronounce, read, or was complicated in some way. We did these two or three times. We would find the words in the text. Reread the text for meaning. If that didn’t help we talked about if they had heard the word before in other life experience. This cleared up all words so we didn’t use the dictionary we had. It was then time to go.
Responsibility of each candidate: Emily was working with Isabella. She did the journal with Isabella at the same time I did the journal with Abbi and Val. She then did an assessment that she had done before. We broke up at that point and I worked with Abbi and Val. We then all walked out together at the end.
What worked well: Wow! I have to say it went all right but it was an interesting hour. The reason is because I had an advance activity planned for Abbi working on root words/bases and vocabulary meanings so I changed everything right there on the spot. I think the fact I started them together and kept them doing the same type of activities just different levels worked well. This was a blended activity to mesh the new student with Abbi and it appeared to work.
What can be improved: I’ve talked to Dr. Edwards and he’s deciding what to do with the new students. We have had about four the last couple of weeks. At this time he told me I would probable keep Val but he was going to try to get the middle school tutors or himself to get a couple of assessment done on her so I would have a better idea where she was at. I don’t mind working with her at all I just don’t want to slow down Abbi’s sessions but trying to play catch up with Val. Now that I know she will be there I will have my activites created to work with both students.
