Name: Teresa L. Shelton
Partner’s name: Emily
Students’ names: Isabella & Abbi
Activities Used: Icebreakers, News About Me, books student had in backpack, Garfield reading assessment, Uno card game.
Reasons for Activity: The icebreakers were used because Abbi didn’t make the first tutoring session and I wanted her to have a chance to get to know me and so I could learn about her in an easy to talk format. It also gave us a chance to learn about her likes, background, and other information she felt was important for us to know. . Abbi was very easy going and seem to like the fact I knew about the store Justice and about monster high dolls. We also used the form “News about Me” to gather information about her. She was very willing to answer all the questions and shared more about herself voluntarily. We went over the books she had in her backpack from library. She really likes the Geronimo Stilton books. In fact she said that is all she likes this year for reading. The Garfield reading assessment she answered was very easy for her and seemed to answer honestly because her answers were all over the scope of answers. We only had five minutes left so Emily let Abbi and I play a game of Uno with her and Isabella. The game was a fun way to end and it came with easy to read directions that the students had to read to play the game.
Responsibility of each candidate: Isabella and Emily worked on two assessments while I worked with Abbi. Abbi and I did the icebreakers and the news about me form. We also completed the Garfield reading assessment while Emily and Isabella completed theirs. We worked as a team at the end to bring the girls back together at the end of the session.
What can be improved: You can tell we are still working out problems as a whole group. The snack situation was still a problem but one of the teachers got permission from the secretary to give the kids a snack. I was then told to have them eat it in the gym. That took ten minutes out of tutoring for the entire process. Once we got into our groups we seemed to do all right. I believe next week will be better because both girls will be ready to start because they know us and know what to expect. Abbi missing the first week meant we needed to get know each other and Isabella was ready to still be in icebreaker mode since Abbi was.
